While surfing the net one evening, by
chance, I came across some miniature
donkeys. I emailed my mom, Sally, and told
her how cute the combo of my youngest niece,
Claire, and a mini-donk would look. Well, it
didn’t take very long after that exchange.
Before I knew it, minis were showing up and
I was moving my quarter horses to make
room!!
Our initial purchase was a gentle gelding,
Skipper, we
picked up in Tennessee. My aunt and
uncle, Diane and Bruce Hughes, who both are
Paint Horse Breeders in Tennessee, showed us
around some of central Tennessee’s miniature
donkey farms. We loaded the trailer up with
as many as we could find, and we have been
working on our herd ever since.
On April 25, 2004,
our first donkey foal
(HHH Sunday Surprise) was
delivered safe and sound. She was a
beautiful paint filly out of Arrow Creek
Belle by Arrow Creek Kostas. She stood 20”
and weighed a whopping 20 lbs. Of course, she
came in a driving rain storm. No matter
however, her first time mom delivered
without a glitch and we escorted both
to the barn. It was very exciting!!!
We currently have a herd of 13 (2 Jacks, 2
Gelding, 6 Jennets, 2 Weanlings, and 1 Foal) but still
growing. |
